A Little History About Wizards And The Roles They Played
By definition, a wizard is one who practices magic. Also called a
sorcerer or magician, he is a pretender to supernatural knowledge and
power. Wizards were said to be the "All Knowing One". They were known to have "wizardly powers" and "charming incantations"; creating magic spells with words, wands and brews.
History tells us that the traditional role of a wizard is portrayed as a prophet,
a visionary and a master of nature’s elements. A so called "genius" who works with nature to transform himself and others. Wizards are depicted in stories as alchemists. An alchemist is one who practices alchemy; in medieval times the predecessor of chemistry which was the practice of combining elements of metal and his stone to create metals, cures and more.
Wizards were also seen as the keepers of secret knowledge and the seekers of
hidden knowledge and truth. They would share that knowledge with their apprentices in order to keep the knowledge "alive".
The legendary Merlin was the most popular of all the wizards of fiction. Most recently, Gandalf and Harry Potter have become almost as popular and will most likely become legendary as well. All of these wizards seem to have been very different but are all equally mysterious.
