Fairies in Folklore and Literature

Fairies have been a prevalent part of literature, art and mythical culture for ages.  Just what is a fairy?  A fairy is a tiny human-looking being with wings for flying.  They can change forms or disappear when needed.  Fairies have magical powers, such as the ability to change aspects of nature or to heal the sick.

Although female fairies are more common, male fairies are also known to "exist".  Fairies move swiftly and become invisible as they blend into the woods.  They are rarely seen by humans, but written accounts seem to be consistent...  They wear green, gold or blue clothes which are thought to have been created from natural elements such as leaves and vines.  Fairies tend to live on hills, in woody dells, underwater or the "Other World" Fairyland.  They enjoy music and dancing.  They also love to play "innocent" tricks on each other.  Legend has it that fairies are capable of taking human lovers.  They've been known to enchant humans and trap them in the fairy realm...  And what a beautiful realm it must be!

Movies for Fairy Lovers:

Fairy Tale: A True Story- Two girls in England take pictures of fairies with their father's camera.

The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns- A kind of Romeo/Juliet story with the daughter of the fairy king falling in love with the son of the leprechaun leader. Does this one end happily?  You'll have to watch it to find out.  Features Whoopi Goldberg as the great banshee and Colm Meany as the leprechaun leader. (This one is family friendly it was made for the Hallmark channel.)

Peter Pan-(live action version)  The story that you know and love, but with real people.  (The cartoon version by Disney is good also).  This version has a truly magical fairy dance scene in it that will make you wish you could go to Neverland yourself just to see it.  It also features a gorgeous Tinkerbell throughout.  A great movie to watch with your kids.
